Children born from January 1, 2024 are eligible for this vaccine
The GGD South Limburg will start with the rotavirus vaccination from January 2024. This concerns a new vaccine in the National Vaccination Programme.
What is rotavirus?
Rotavirus is a highly contagious virus that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The infection can occur at any age. Young children (under 2 years old) and the elderly in particular are more likely to suffer serious consequences. Look at this video for more explanation.
Who is the rotavirus vaccination for?
From 2024 it will be possible to have children born from January 1 vaccinated against rotavirus. The advice is to administer the first rotavirus vaccination before the age of 12 weeks. Preferably between 6 and 9 weeks.
About the rotavirus vaccination
The vaccination protects against serious consequences of a rotavirus infection. In addition, the vaccine also helps reduce the spread of the virus.
The vaccine used is called Rotarix. The vaccination is new in the National Vaccination Programme, but the vaccine is an existing vaccine. It is a live attenuated drinking vaccine. It is given as drops in the mouth. A complete vaccination series consists of two vaccinations. At the GGD Zuid-Limburg, the first administration is done during the 8-week consultation. The second administration is done at the 3-month consultation.
