Rot-Weiss Essen’s Strong Performance and Good News from the RWE Hospital: Fit Top Performers and Tactical Decisions Lead to Positive Results

Rot-Weiss Essen has established itself in the top half of the table after six match days. RWE can currently be satisfied with the development of the team.

Christoph Dabrowski, head coach of Rot-Weiss Essen, announced good news from the RWE hospital on Friday.

The top performers Andreas Wiegel and Vinko Sapina, who both struggled with muscle problems during the training week, reported fit in time before the home game against SSV Jahn Regensburg and were able to play from the start.

Compared to the 2-0 away win at SC Freiburg’s U23s before the international break, Dabrowski made two changes to his starting lineup. Marvin Obuz moved to the left side in place of the injured Thomas Eisfeld and Ron Berlinski was preferred to Moussa Doumbouya in the center of the attack.

Although RWE subsequently failed to score in the 0-0 draw against Regensburg, the decisions were right. Obuz played his best game in the Essen jersey and was a constant asset and Berlinski also showed a good performance – although he did not score the first goal of the season he had hoped for.

In the center of midfield, Dabrowski chose an offensive approach – as he did against Münster and in Freiburg – and fielded three strong players in Vinko Sapina, Torben Müsel and Cedric Harenbrock. The Essen football teacher did without a classic clearer like Björn Rother and, with this courageous approach, set a clear course of action – and an offensive one at that.

It was the right decision. RWE has rarely played as well in recent months or even years as it did in this first round. Lots of ball possession, lots of dominance and good combinations.

The three of us in midfield are already playing with each other a bit and know what makes each other tick. I think we are already relatively well coordinated.

Torben Müsel.

When asked by RevierSport, midfielder Müsel praised the interaction with his teammates: “The three of us in midfield already play with each other a bit and know what makes each other tick. I think we’re relatively well coordinated. We know what ours are movements and whether the person next to you would rather have the ball in their feet or in their path.”

So the plan worked, but what was missing was the return. Although Essen had a clear increase in chances, there were not enough clear opportunities for the dominant style of play. A chance to do better in the attacking third comes next Sunday (September 24th, 1:30 p.m.) with the away game against strong newcomers SSV Ulm.
