The largest operator of broadband Internet access in Russia, Rostelecom, has entered into a deal to purchase 800,000 Russian Wi-Fi routers from Electra in the amount of 2.7 billion rubles. This agreement paves the way for the mass introduction of domestic technologies in the field of wireless communications and can significantly change the distribution of shares in the network equipment market, giving Electra the opportunity to occupy a significant market segment.

Yesterday, Rostelecom and Electra officially announced an agreement as part of the demo day of the industrial competence centers “Mobile Communications” and “Fixed Communications”. The first batch of Wi-Fi 5 routers is expected in November 2023, and deliveries of the next generation Wi-Fi 6 devices are planned to begin by May 2024. Mass implementation of the latest technology is scheduled for the end of 2024.

The contract includes the supply of domestic equipment for FTTB (Fiber to the Building) and GPON technologies. The cost of development and implementation of 350,000 units of FTTB CPE routers is estimated at 1.1 billion rubles, and 450,000 units of GPON ONT routers – 1.6 billion rubles.

The first batch of 300,000 routers (GPON ONT and FTTB CPE) will be delivered to Rostelecom in November 2023. As Electra General Director Natalya Shcheglova clarified, subscribers of the state operator will be able to use new Wi-Fi devices in their apartments or houses.

Electra’s solutions turn out to be more expensive than previously purchased imported routers. The difference is no more than 10%, although initially it could reach 40%, as a Rostelecom representative said. At the same time, Electra plans to gradually increase production to 1 million devices per year, switching to more productive modern chipsets with support for Wi-Fi 6.

According to the managing partner of TMT Consulting, Konstantin Ankilov, a batch of Wi-Fi routers of 800,000 pieces is quite large. “Such a one-time order is unique for Russian manufacturers“, he said. Analyst, author of the Abloud62 Telegram channel Alexey Boyko agreed that the forward contract for 800,000 routers is really significant, and Electra’s market share at the end of two years can amount to tens of percent.

Against the backdrop of current market trends, domestic manufacturers have every chance to replace cheaper TP-Link and D-Link products. Experts note that even if only equipment assembly is carried out in Russia, this is already a significant advantage.
