Rospotrebnadzor will test Russians for immunity to coronavirus

The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that in some regions of Russia, studies of the immunity of Russians to the coronavirus COVID-19 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) will soon begin. She did not specify which specific regions were in question. Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that Moscow has already begun such research first among other subjects of the federation.

“Next week we will start a well-planned, it’s very important, calculated population study in a number of subjects of the Russian Federation in order to determine which part of our society, our population has immunity against the new coronavirus,” Ms. Popova said at a briefing on Tuesday (quote from Interfax).

The head of Rospotrebnadzor called the “absolute fact” the formation of immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the human body, but it is not yet known how long this immunity can last. To clarify this, such studies are needed.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, in turn, noted that Moscow was the first to launch a large-scale study of immunity among citizens. First, immunity tests were held by Moscow doctors. Primary data showed that 21% of those who passed the test have antibodies. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, indicators of such studies were included in the methodological recommendations of the Rospotrebnadzor on how to assess the epidemic situation in the region.

Recall that in April, representatives of the World Health Organization said that serological tests do not reveal immunity to coronavirus in those who have already had it. At the same time, a person who has antibodies in his blood cannot yet be sure that he is completely protected from re-infection, according to the WHO.
