Rospotrebnadzor told how to distinguish flu and cold from coronavirus

The flu is spreading faster than the coronavirus due to its shorter incubation period, the federal headquarters said on November 3. However, with coronavirus, the proportion of severe and critical cases is higher than with influenza. Also, the risk groups for influenza and coronavirus differ slightly.

Influenza is severely ill for children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with chronic diseases and immunodeficiency. With coronavirus, the risk of severe illness increases in older people and patients with chronic diseases. But children in general tolerate it easily. Coronavirus and influenza generally have similar symptoms. But there are some minor differences. Fatigue, joint pain and headache are more common with flu than with covid. Shortness of breath is a sign of lung damage (development of viral pneumonia). This can be with coronavirus and flu. In addition, most cases of coronavirus infection occur without lung involvement (and without shortness of breath). Shortness of breath cannot be called a symptom characteristic of a coronavirus.

As for the common cold, its hallmark symptoms are sneezing, runny nose and sore throat. In coronavirus and flu, these symptoms are much less common, sneezing – never at all. “To be on the safe side, please keep in mind the simple rules of prevention: use a mask, practice hand hygiene and social distancing. Be healthy!” – reminds Rospotrebnadzor.
