Rose Monday will take place this year on February 12, 2024 and is the highlight of the carnival season in the carnival strongholds of Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen and Mainz. Real carnival lovers start the parties from November 11th, when the season officially starts. But it is only from Weiberfastnacht that people go out in disguise and celebrate carnival together.
Is Rose Monday a public holiday?
All employees must be prepared because Rose Monday is February 12, 2024 not a public holiday.
In Cologne alone, an average of up to 1.5 million people celebrate Rose Monday. It’s not just on the streets that people start dancing and partying in the morning, people also gather in the bars and pubs. These people either have to take vacation or are released by the employer.
Some companies in the strongholds close on the main carnival days and give their employees time off. These receive a traditional holiday or are exempted. However, this must be clearly communicated; not everyone in Cologne or Düsseldorf automatically has time off. Without the official exemption from your employer, Rose Monday is a completely normal working day.
In addition, the shops are open as normal – except, of course, where the carnival parades go.
Is there no school on Rose Monday?
In principle the same applies to schools: Since Shrove Monday is not a public holiday, the students have not automatically school-free. As a rule, however, they are exempted from school in the carnival strongholds.
School principals have a certain number of movable holidays at their disposal, which are spread throughout the year and are usually scheduled on the carnival days. As a rule, parents receive an overview for their children at the beginning of the school year with the statutory and flexible holidays, where all school-free days are listed.
