Lewis Hamilton had a dramatic race weekend in Emilia-Romagna and team boss Toto Wolff rushed to the on-board radio to apologize for the W13’s poor performance. According to former Mercedesdriver Nico Rosberg, however, did not tell Wolff the truth to Hamilton.

Rosberg, who worked with Wolff and Hamilton at Mercedes for many years, saw the Austrian team boss report on the on-board radio to Hamilton immediately after the race on the on-board radio to apologize after he finished in P14: “Hey Lewis, sorry for what you had to drive today. I know this cannot be done and it is not the result we deserved. This was a terrible race. We will get out of this.” According to Rosberg, Wolff only said this to support Hamilton and keep him motivated, but it was not quite the truth. The 2016 world champion points to George Russell, who ‘just’ finished fourth.

Rosberg: Wolff wasn’t exactly telling the truth

Wolff spoke nice and supportive words towards Hamilton and that was a smart move, Rosberg thinks. However, he emphasizes that Wolff lied a bit here. “Mercedes is taking the blame, they’re trying to support Lewis mentally. They’re trying to cheer him up by saying, ‘Hey Lewis, it’s not your fault, it’s really up to us.’ That’s very smart, because it’s not exactly the truth,” Rosberg told the microphone after the Grand Prix in Imola. Sky Sports† “Toto played the mental game, which is something very smart from his side.”

Hamilton played a major role in poor result

The fact that Hamilton finishes in 14th place, while his team-mate Russell managed to take fourth place, is reason enough not to blame the performance of the W13, according to Rosberg. “Let’s not forget that Russell is in P4 with that same car, so Lewis himself had a big part in the poor result this weekend,” said the German. “Russell still managed to get a P4 in a brilliant weekend, so there was more in that car.”
