/ world today news/ The Russian state energy company “Rosatom” announced that it will resume the supply of nuclear fuel to Europe through Ukraine after Kiev lifted a ban on the transport of such materials during anti-government protests earlier this year, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA .
The ban was introduced on January 28 by the government of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled Ukraine last month.
Rosatom said the ban ended on Thursday and the first rail shipment of nuclear fuel of 2014 through Ukraine to Eastern Europe is expected next week.
“Rosatom is committed to the safe delivery of nuclear fuel and the collection of spent fuel to and from our customers in Europe. If new problems arise with deliveries by rail through Ukraine, we will guarantee timely deliveries by air,” company spokesman Vladyslav Bochkov said.
Among the nuclear power plants that have signed contracts with Rosatom for the supply of nuclear fuel are Bulgaria’s Kozloduy NPP, Hungary’s Pax, Czech Dukovany and Temelin, and Slovakia’s Bohunice, notes Reuters.
