(Central News Agency, Atlanta, 19th, comprehensive foreign news reports) The Associated Press reported that Rosalynn, wife of former U.S. President Carter, has died at the age of 96. Rosalynn was Carter’s closest adviser during the one-term presidency and during their 40 years of global humanitarian work after leaving office.
Reports pointed out that the Carter Center said that Rosalynn Carter, who suffered from dementia, passed away today after her health continued to deteriorate for several months.
Jimmy Carter and Rosalyn have been married for more than 77 years, forming what they call a “comprehensive partnership.” Unlike many previous first ladies, she would attend cabinet meetings, speak out on controversial issues, and also make foreign visits on behalf of Carter. Carter’s staff sometimes privately call her “co-president.”
When Carter was in the White House from 1977 to 1981, she told her staff: “Rosalyn was my best friend…the perfect extension of me and perhaps the most influential person in my life.”
Fiercely loyal, compassionate, and politically astute, Rosalind prided herself on being an activist First Lady, and no one doubted her influence behind the scenes.
The Carter Center posted on the social networking site In the forwarded video, the couple can be seen attending the event in a black SUV.
The Carter Center shared a video taken by people present at the time and said: “The Carters enjoyed a wonderful day at the Plains Peanut Festival! And he (Carter) will be 99 years old in a week.”
Carter, a Democrat, served as a senator and governor of Georgia in the 1960s and 1970s, and was elected president in 1976. When he ran for reelection in 1980, he lost to Republican opponent Ronald Reagan.
Yet as Carter and Rosalynn worked on global human rights, democracy and health issues, his reputation grew and gained recognition, while he maintained a fiercely modest public persona. (Translator: He Hongru) 1121120
