The Battle for Privacy and Justice: A New Chapter Unfolds
After the premiere of the series “El cuerpo en llamas” depicting the crime involving the Guardia Urbana, Rosa Peral has emerged victorious in her fight against Netflix for its broadcast. The Barcelona Court is now considering the appeal filed by her defense, led by lawyer Núria González, requesting urgent measures to halt the series due to references to her two minor daughters, or to allow her to view it first to determine any potential infringement on her right to honor or that of her children.
The Barcelona Court has now ruled in favor of Peral. According to Section 19, “the first step should have been to decide whether the requested measures should be adopted without prior hearing of the defendant or to summon the parties to a hearing to present their arguments,” something that was not done.
“Demands, of any kind, can only be exceptionally dismissed,” states the ruling of the Barcelona Court consulted by this newspaper. Last September, the Vilanova (Barcelona) investigating judge dismissed the request for not providing the required bail – a monetary deposit – needed to file such legal actions.
Peral’s lawyer argued that the former Guardia Urbana officer could not provide bail as she is in prison and still owes 800,000 euros in compensation for the murder of her ex-partner, also a fellow officer whom she killed alongside another colleague, forming a love triangle.
The lawyer explained to Europa Press that this means the lawsuit for Peral and her daughters’ right to honor “is automatically admitted, and the process begins now.”
“Once we are notified of the reopening of the process, we will request the precautionary measures we deem necessary,” she added regarding the potential consequences of this new judicial decision.
Netflix premiered the series on September 8, depicting the Guardia Urbana crime starring Úrsula Corberó as Rosa Peral and Quim Gutiérrez as the other convicted individual, Albert López. The Supreme Court upheld the sentences imposed by the Barcelona Court in 2020, sentencing Peral to 25 years in prison and López to 20 years for the murder of Pedro Rodríguez, the partner of the Urbana officer. According to the verdict, Peral and López ended Rodríguez’s life because he was an obstacle to their romantic relationship.
