Milk comes with a “best before” date, but should last much longer after this has passed. But an expiry date of over a year, that’s probably mostly made up, isn’t it?
An error has occurred on some of the milk cartons for Rørosmeiriet, which means that the expiry date has been set to 2025.
DinSide journalist Martin was met with the following poster when he went to buy milk on Saturday at Kiwi XL in Strømsø center in the morning.

On closer inspection of one of the milk cartons in the fridge in the shop, we can see that the expiry date is 21.01.25. The year is often confused when we move into a new year, but we are pretty sure that we are in 2024.
Sent out 20,000 liters of milk
– We had a tough start to the year, to put it mildly, writes dairy manager at Rørosmeiriet, Trond Vilhelm Lund, in an email to DinSide.
– We only discovered the error on 3 January. By then, approximately 20,000 liters had already been sent from us, he continues.
It will primarily be the Norgesgruppen stores that have received the misbranded milk.

What must have happened is that the program for date marking jumped forward one year when we went from 2023 to 2024. The Røros dairy’s routine of checking the correct date did not pick up the wrong year, says Trond Vilhelm Lund.
– It is the number of days from production to the best before date that has the greatest focus – the first 4 digits.

As can be seen from the poster that is hung up in the shops, the milk is not withdrawn because of the mislabelling.
“The store and we agree to sell the branded milk as it is, rather than emptying it out,” it says.
– After dialogue with the quality department in the Norgesgruppen, we agreed that the batch that had been sent could be sold, as all milk in Norway is fresh. We think consumers also know that. We think it was right to take care of the milk and not discard a perfectly good product, says the dairy manager.
– I guess I can also say that now in retrospect we are extra vigilant about the year as well.
