Additional measures are being taken in Roosendaal to combat violence and possession of weapons. After a series of shooting incidents in the city, the measure is now really full, says mayor Han van Midden.
According to Broadcasting Brabant there have been several shooting incidents in Roosendaal in a few months. This is how a 27-year-old man was hit last Sunday badly injured when shots were fired several times. Last month, a group of people shot in broad daylight in a circle. Two men have been arrested for this.
This week the police, the Public Prosecution Service and the mayor met to discuss the violent crime in the city. An analysis must show what is being fought in Roosendaal and what connections there are. “We want to know why all this has happened in recent months,” the municipality reports.
Temporary security risk area
The police will tighten up surveillance in and around the city. Agents will check access roads to Roosendaal for possession of weapons. The mayor is considering temporarily designating these roads as a safety risk area. The police may then search people preventively and search luggage.
The municipality has not announced when the checks will take place. “That happens on different days and times.” In addition to the checks, the police also want to use drones.
“We are doing everything we can to reduce gun violence,” says mayor Van Midden. “We want to prevent innocent victims from falling. Roosendalers should not have to worry about stray bullets from criminals.”
‘Structural more people needed’
What makes it difficult is that, according to the mayor, there is too little police capacity in Roosendaal. “The Roosendaal agents and the Public Prosecution Service are doing their utmost. But we also see that structurally more people are needed for analysis, investigation and prosecution,” says Van Midden.
“Not only for Roosendaal but for the entire Zeeland-West Brabant police unit.”
