A two-room fire kept Vienna’s professional fire brigade busy on Sunday. More than 66 emergency services with 14 vehicles were deployed in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and Liesing. No one was injured, fire department spokesman Christian Feiler told the APA. In one case, the owner of the apartment acted with such presence of mind that the smoke did not spread to neighboring apartments. This meant that the practice could remain much smaller than it would have been possible.
Around lunchtime there was a kitchen fire in an apartment building on Kanitzgasse in Liesing. The fire was fought by firefighters using a fire line using breathing apparatus. According to Feiler, the fleeing tenant behaved properly in the difficult situation: she closed the apartment door behind her when she left. This meant that the stairwell was still smoke free and all the neighbors were able to stay within their own four walls without being disturbed as the smoke only stayed in the unit on the there was a victory. It was only there and in an apartment where there was not much smoke that a high performance fan had to be used in the end.
“If those affected in this busy situation can remember to remove the key when they escape and close the apartment door behind them, it will help the situation a lot,” Feiler said. The apartment can then be opened with a smoke curtain and the smoke will remain in the affected unit and no longer move.
The other case happened again on Felberstrasse in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. In the early hours of the morning, a fire broke out on the first floor of an apartment building in an old building for reasons that are still unknown. When the fire brigade arrived, thick smoke was already coming from two windows of an apartment on the first floor. The entire staircase was also full of smoke. The fleeing tenant left his apartment door open when he left.
The emergency services extinguished the fire through the stairs using a fire extinguisher line and breathing protection. At the same time, the turntable ladder was positioned to get four people out to safety through the windows. A further eight people were rescued from inside the house and outside using escape filter hoods. Extensive ventilation measures were then required throughout the building.
