Rooftop tents are a new option that has rapidly become popular over the past five years.
We picked up interesting exhibits from the “Yokohama Camper Show 2023″ held at Pacifico Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture from October 21st to 22nd, 2023. This time, we will introduce a “rooftop tent” that can be attached to the roof of a regular vehicle rather than a camper or trailer.

At the Yokohama Camper Show, where many campers gathered, I discovered a brand called James BAROUD that specializes in rooftop tents.
A rooftop tent is a tent that is installed on top of a roof carrier attached to a typical passenger car. When retracted, it is about the size of a roof box, but when unfolded, a large space appears that can accommodate two adults, depending on the product. Of course, compared to installing a campervan, it is quite reasonable and there is no need to replace the vehicle, so it is rapidly gaining popularity as a new option.
There are different types and methods of rooftop tents: soft shell types that open up to look like a large tent, and hard shell types that are sandwiched between a hard shell case on the top and bottom. Furthermore, among the hard shell types, there are shell types where the top opens diagonally with one side as a fulcrum, and tower types that open straight upwards.
Newly introduced at this event was a tower-shaped rooftop tent called ODYSSEY M, which uses a new ABS material for the shell material. It was installed in a demo car, the Mitsubishi Delica D:5, to give an idea of the atmosphere and size of the device when it was actually installed in a vehicle.
Can be installed on many vehicles and allows two adults to sleep comfortably
The size when stored is 140cm wide x 198cm long and only 33.5cm thick. By unfolding this, the top shell rises approximately 1m upwards. It’s basically the size of a double bed, so two adults can sleep comfortably. The upper and lower parts of the shell are assisted by hydraulic dampers, making it easy for one person to work. It also has a mechanism that locks it in the unfolded state, making it highly wind resistant.
By the way, a big advantage of rooftop tents is that since the tent is installed on top of the car, there is good ventilation in the summer and you can sleep comfortably. It can be said that this system is well-suited to the hot and humid climate of Japan.

James Burrowd has a rooftop tent mounted on a trailer for demonstration purposes, and is exhibiting it at events across the country, and this time as well, in addition to the latest ODYSSEY M, they will be displaying two rooftop tents mounted on a trailer. They also introduced the company’s spot coolers and portable power supplies.
The price of ODYSSEY M is 599,500 yen (tax included). Considering the cost of introducing a camper, it can be considered reasonable. Rooftop tents also have the advantage of being able to be removed when not needed. It seems that it can be installed in many car models if a general roof carrier can be attached.
