Former Portugal international Fernando Meira has criticized Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to leave the pitch and throw away his captain’s armband, calling it “unacceptable” behavior.
Ronaldo burst out of the pitch before the final whistle, after being denied a clear winner in their 2-2 draw with Serbia in a UEFA World Cup qualifier Group A.
Stefan Mitrovic tried to get Ronaldo off the line, but despite his best efforts, he entered the goal.
However, referee Danny Makkelie stirred the play, and there was no VAR or goal line technology to verify the appeal.
“It’s a clear goal, but Ronaldo can’t throw Portugal’s captain’s armband on the ground.
“Cristiano’s reaction is natural but unacceptable for the captain of the national team. You cannot throw the captain’s armband on the floor and go to the locker room while the game is still in progress.
“It is not acceptable for a player of his importance. I understand his frustration and agree with him because the goal was valid, but it’s the referees who have to make decisions, without VAR, and he has to lead by example. And yesterday’s was not to follow, ”said Meira, who has 54 caps for Portugal.
