How can Manchester United still lead the Europa League group?
Manchester United comfortably won the Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0, keeping the chances of winning the group open. Cristiano Ronaldo promptly scored on the return from disqualification.
His goal wasn’t that important to the outcome of the match against Tiraspol, but it was all the more important for him personally. In a season already packed with matches, it’s the last thing United need as the English record champions already have two Premier League games postponed on their calendar. It would be far from ideal to have to compete against a relegated CL team, especially as top-tier players like FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Ajax are threatening.
How Manchester United can win Europa League Group E
Real Sociedad and Manchester United have secured the top two positions in Group E: neither the sheriff nor Omonia Nicosia can reach them on the final day.
After five games played, Real Sociedad are leading with 15 points. United are twelve points behind and have won four games. Sociedad won the first match between the two teams 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Brais Mendez.
With UEFA going head-to-head in the Europa League in the event of a points tie, United will need to improve Sociedad’s 1-0 draw at Old Trafford to lead the group. A 1-0 win will not be enough for United as heads-up play would be tied and goal difference would be the next criterion; Sociedad has a three-goal advantage.
