Ronaldo chasing records: CR7 takes the lead

Not yet Portugal’s top scorer at the World Cup: Cristiano Ronaldo

Portugal qualified early for the round of 16 at the World Cup in Qatar and celebrated their second victory in two games. However, Ronaldo had a record goal against Uruguay disallowed.

Confusion arose over who opened the scoring in Portugal’s 2-0 win against Uruguay. After a cross from Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo once again demonstrated his air superiority in the penalty area.

However, this time he touched the ball – if at all – with the ends of his hair. In any case, the trajectory of the ball hasn’t changed, so he took into account Bruno Fernandes’ goal, with which CR7 also cheered immediately after the goal.

After the final whistle, however, Ronaldo signaled that his head was on the ball. It would have been the goal that would have made him one of the top goalscorers in the history of the Portuguese World Cup.

Far from Miroslav Klose’s record

Eusébio, the 1966 World Cup superstar, holds the Portuguese record with a total of nine World Cup goals. However, with Portugal progressing to the round of 16, Ronaldo still has at least two chances to equal or even better that record.

Cristiano Ronaldo is still a long way from setting a record in the overall scorer rankings of the World Cup. The superstar scored eight times in 19 World Cup matches. His Brazilian namesake Ronaldo made as many appearances and scored 15 goals. A record that Miroslav Klose (24 World Cup appearances) broke in 2014 by winning 7-1 against Brazil.

Argentine Lionel Messi also has eight goals and has also made 21 World Cup appearances. With seven goals in nine games, France striker Kylian Mbappé is just one adrift of Ronaldo and Messi.
