Ronald Koeman believes that he should have been less harsh with his criticism of Brian Brobbey. The Dutch national coach was surprised by the program a week ago Rondo out loud about the acceptance and finishing of the Ajax striker.
“We had him there during the previous international match. Then we were finishing and you saw that his first assumption and way of finishing were not good,” Koeman said a week ago about the 21-year-old Brobbey. “Then I wonder: what do you do as a striker at the clubs you have been to?”
Brobbey already announced last week that he can live with the criticism, but Koeman said at his press conference in Zeist on Tuesday that he should have handled it differently.
“In retrospect, I should have protected Brobbey more,” said Koeman. “But yes, I am a bad politician. And you are sometimes punished for that. Although I am surprised that it has become such an item.”
Koeman also discussed the incident with Brobbey himself, although the attacker is missing this international match due to an injury for the Dutch team. “I told him I should have defended him more.”

The national coach acknowledged that he sometimes finds it difficult not to be too honest when discussing players openly. “In today’s society you have to be careful.”
“But you have to be able to say things privately, regardless of the person. And I do that too. Only outwardly I sometimes say too much what I think. That is not always wise. But yes, I am not a politician who talks a lot and doesn’t say much. I sometimes get hit on the ears with that. And that’s allowed.”
Koeman then said that he also sees many good points in Brobbey, who made his international debut against Greece in October. “Brobbey is developing well. He is strong, fast and dangerous. But there is still plenty to improve.”
