With the recently released Nightmare Alley hit William of the Bull a slightly different path in terms of style, but the result is again astonishing. It also marks the fifth collaboration of the successful visionary with favorite actor Ron Perlman.
Perlman played the red-skinned leather trench-coat-wearing demon twice in a brawny, mischievous take on the superhero genre, thanks to Del Toro’s dark humor and Gothic aesthetic.
They made Hellboy (2004) in Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). In 2019, the series received a bombed reboot met David Harbour (Stranger Things) in the lead role, but what fans really want and are waiting for is a third part from the duo Del Toro/Perlman.
The back and forth about the project has fluctuated in recent years and now Perlman has spoken out again: “Am I excited to do ‘Hellboy 3’? No, I’m fucking 71 years old and I don’t think I can physically take it anymore. But we owe this to the fans and we have to give it to them because it’s an epic conclusion So Guillermo, if you’re reading this, I’m not done pounding you to get this damn thing made”!
Didn’t have a Perlman almost early on
There was a moment, in the mid-’80s, when Perlman considered giving up acting. He didn’t get much more than guest spots on TV shows, but more than three decades later and through sheer talent and perseverance (and a bit of luck), he has become a favorite name of one of the most acclaimed directors alive.
