Ron Jans is the new trainer of FC Utrecht. This means that the sabbatical of the 64-year-old coach will come to an end after just two months. Jans’ task is to quickly improve the situation in Utrecht, where Michael Silberbauer and later Rob Penders lost the first four league games.
The name of Jans has been singing around in Utrecht for some time. Today, the club confirmed the arrival of the chastened trainer, who will sign until mid-2025.
After defeats against PSV, SC Heerenveen and PEC Zwolle, FC Utrecht decided last week to send Silberbauer out after just three matches. Last weekend, Rob Penders acted as interim trainer for the group, but things didn’t get any better in the Galgenwaard with a 5-1 home defeat against Feyenoord.
‘Urge to contribute’
“Last summer I had in mind to take a sabbatical until January, but sometimes there are chances to be caught,” says Jans on the Utrecht site. “The first conversation with FC Utrecht did not go out of my head: I see the opportunities here and feel the urge to make my contribution.”
With Ron Jans, the club will in any case bring in an extremely experienced trainer. Jans won both the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruijff Shield with PEC Zwolle. He also trained teams such as FC Groningen, SC Heerenveen and FC Twente.
In Enschede he reached the play-offs of the Conference League twice. However, both Fiorentina (last season) and Fenerbahce (last week) were lost.
