– When I started with this game, my biggest fear was that Disney would not let me make the game I wanted to make, but they have been fantastic to work with. It’s ironic that those who do not want me to make the game I want to make are avid Monkey Island fans. That’s what makes me sad when I see all these comments.

Otherwise, Gilbert points out that the Monkey Island series has always focused on visual innovation. That’s how it was when the developer veteran made the first two games, and that’s still the way it is now.

– If I had stayed to make Monkey Island 3, it would not have looked like Monkey Island 3. We would have continued to push forward, something Day of the Tentacle is a good proof of.

For Return to Monkey Island, Gilbert therefore wanted a look that is “provocative, shocking and not what everyone expects”. The game manager reports that he is very pleased with the work that the design and animation team has done so far.

– Return to Monkey Island may not have the visual style you wanted or expected, but it’s the style I wanted.
