Romeo and Juliet, Top Gun: Maverick. The lawsuits could cost Paramount hundreds of millions of dollars

So far, Paramount has approached both cases the same way: it remains rather silent, letting everything be decided by the appropriate courts. In the case of the requirements for the film Top Gun: Maverick, the company initially refused to be inspired in any way by the article, according to which the very successful number one would also be made.

It was written in 1983 for a California magazine by Israeli journalist Ehud Jonay. The film, to which Jonay later granted the copyright, was released in theaters in 1986. Since Jonay’s death in 2012, Paramount has been sued in June 2022 by his widow Šoš and her son Juval.

They claim that the film studio has violated their copyright, which they inherited. They then ask for a share of the profits, i.e. the earnings from the second installment, Top Gun: Maverick (2022). They have already exceeded $1.4 billion worldwide (about CZK 31 billion).

Are one and two similar?

The US courts have not yet ruled on this case. However, Paramount according to the magazine Variety declares that he has no obligations towards the heirs. Also because the plot of the second film is completely different from the first film and the military facility itself, where the action of the films takes place, is not subject to any copyright.

However, Judge Percy Anderson dismissed these arguments in November, saying the similarity between number one and number two is significant. So the case continues. According to Variety, this situation complicates the possible preparation of the Top Gun trio, which has been under consideration.

At the end of the year, despite everything described, Paramount offered double as part of its streaming services. As of December 22, Top Gun: Maverick is available online for viewers in the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Latin America, among others.

At the end of the year, there was another lawsuit against Paramount, by the now 72-year-old Leonard Whiting and his colleague who was a year younger, Olivia Hussey. In a court in Santa Monica, US, they are trying to get more than $500 million (nearly 11.4 billion kroner) from the firm for alleged sexual abuse, sexual harassment and fraud.
