Rome, what a mess with Diawara: he risks 0-3 at the table with Verona

In the official list of 25 players delivered by Roma, the 23-year-old midfielder was included in the under 22 and not among the “over”

On the field Verona-Roma ended 0-0, but for the homologation of the result we will have to wait for the sentence of the sports judge. The departure of the Giallorossi, in short, was not the best and not only for the smash of the strikers (the passing of the baton between Dzeko and Milik now at high risk), but also for the alleged regulatory mess in which Dan’s club finds himself Friedkin. In Verona, in fact, by regulation Amadou Diawara could not have taken the field, as in the official list of 25 players delivered by Roma (like every other club) at the beginning of the season he was included in the under 22 and not among the “over”.

In fact, at the beginning of each season, each team must deliver a list of 25 players, to which all the under 22 players they want can be added (threshold that was raised by one year in 2018). And last season Diawara was, in fact, in this sort of B list, that of the under 22s, which allowed Roma to free an extra box for another player older than the Guinean midfielder. In the meantime, however, on 17 July Diawara turned 23 and should have climbed the main list, as per regulation. What, however, that was not done at the beginning of this season, with Diawara remaining in the under 22 list. Roma, of course, are waiting now to understand what will happen, because the regulation provides for a 3-0 defeat (exactly as happened in 2016 to Sassuolo, which was assigned a lost game for having Antonino Ragusa play without having included him in the famous list of 25). Should the sports judge express himself in this sense, however, they are ready to appeal in Trigoria. This is because the error actually occurred, but it is an error that was made in good faith and not with the intent of willful misconduct or fraud. In fact, in the list of 25 places, Rome still has 4 free slots and could easily have included Diawara in one of these. It was an oversight, in short, an oversight. The defensive thesis will be basically this, with Rome that will leverage on absolute good faith. But it is an oversight, however, which could cost the Giallorossi the point won on Saturday night at the Bentegodi.

Last season Diawara, among other things, with Roma has already played 5 games after having turned 23. In fact, due to Covid-19, the 2018/19 calendar was spread beyond its natural expiration, with the Guinean who – so – after his birthday took to the field in the league against Inter, Spal, Fiorentina and Turin, in addition to the match against Sevilla, in the knockout stages of the Europa League. By regulation, however, the status acquired at the beginning of the season is valid. So even though he had already turned 23, Diawara was in effect regularly as an under 22 even in the final part of the season. Now, however, not anymore. And Roma risks finding themselves immediately at zero in the standings.
