Former Brazilian soccer star Romário wrote an emotional letter to superstar Neymar shortly before kick-off for the Seleção World Cup.
In the text entitled “For Neymar” on the Internet platform “The Players Tribune”, the 1994 world champion writes: “No one deserves more than you to bring home this sixth world title. Now it’s your turn! I trust you. O better, Brazil trusts you”.
In the letter, Romário also writes about his own experiences at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where he says the pressure on the Brazilians was enormous. In the end, they still won the title. Neymar is expected to do the same in Qatar, where the Seleção meet Serbia on Thursday.
“I, Romário, know exactly how you feel,” writes the 56-year-old. “Just be yourself. People will criticize you one way or another. But the press, fans and even opponents only admire us when they feel there is some truth in our attitudes. And you know exactly where a player is reaches, right? On the square.” (dpa)
