Romania’s High Infant Mortality from Preventable Diseases: The Urgent Need for Vaccination

Romania ranks first in Europe in infant mortality due to diseases that can be prevented by vaccination.

The disease that kills hundreds of children annually. Livia Stan: The numbers are painful. It has the highest infant mortality rate

Hundreds of children die every year from pneumonia and meningitis even though there is a vaccine.

“From the perspective of the pneumococcal vaccine, it is not a seasonal vaccine. During this period, these infections are increasingly common and affect both children and adults. It is a vaccine that we must consider throughout the year and throughout life.

We can access it for children, through the National Immunization Program. It causes permanent victims in Romania. Romania is one of the main countries that still cannot control pneumonia, meningitis and other infections of this type. Over 600 children under 5 die annually in Romania from these diseases.

It has the highest infant mortality rate in the Member States and pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under 5. It is very important to remember.

The figures are painful, but the situation also looks somewhat worrying in Europe, but there are countries that have managed to reduce the incidence of this disease through immunization”, explained Livia Stan, Policy& Market Access Director MSD, at DC MEDICAL.

The pneumococcal vaccine

Treatment prevents serious pneumococcal infections. These are caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae and can develop pneumonia, blood infections (sepsis) and meningitis, as well as permanent brain damage.

Although the vaccine cannot prevent all infections, it considerably reduces the risk of infection and milder symptoms. The condition mainly affects people with low immunity.
