The Minister of Transport Sorin Grindeanu announced that Romania wants to ask for compensation for the transporters’ losses due to the fact that our country did not enter Schengen, because Austria opposed the accession, and mentioned that the financial impact for this is 2% of the GDP, reports news .US
“I had a discussion the other day with European Commissioner Adina Vălean and I said that we invested a lot of money, for example, in the maintenance of the national roads in that area. If you go now on DN2 towards Suceava, Siret, past Bacău, Focşani, you will see that there is TIR next to TIR, from Ukraine, which however led to a degradation of this network and we asked for money. In total, we sent these requests, not only by road, but also by CFR, by sea – two billion euros”, said Sorin Grindeanu, on Sunday at Prima News, referring to the fact that Romania intends to ask for compensation and for the fact that the road network was degraded by the TIRs coming from Ukraine.
The Minister of Transport announced that he wants Romania to ask for compensation for the costs incurred by the carriers due to the fact that Romania did not enter Schengen.
“I asked my colleagues to present me with a situation by tomorrow lunchtime and I will also ask for these amounts or the Romanian state, I think it would be better to ask for them related to the costs that the carriers had because we did not enter Schengen. I understand that there were some smart people in the past, who were Ministers of Finance and then Prime Ministers and then committed themselves to some deficit targets that you can hardly reach, this being in a period of a pandemic. We are the only country in that excessive deficit procedure at the EU level. Man criticizes, but he is responsible. I mean Cîtu. The conflict in Ukraine also came upon us. You cannot compare the costs that Romania has being on the border and having the largest border with Ukraine and the impact that this war has on Romania and try to stay within those deficit targets. It’s absolutely impossible”, said Grindeanu.
He was asked how he calculated the loss estimate because Romania did not enter the Schengen Area.
“My colleagues will calculate it, talking a lot with the operators. I have asked them since the middle of the week that ends today, and tomorrow at lunch they will present me from the point of view of the transport operators because it is difficult for me to do the calculations on what taxes mean, it is the work of Customs, the hours lost in Customs” , Grindeanu also specified.
Asked if those from the European Commission understood the Schengen issue, the Minister of Transport replied: “The discussions were held by the Prime Minister and he passed them on to us, yes. The impact on our not entering Schengen is 2% of GDP”.
