Romanian President Klaus Iohannis Joins Race for NATO Secretary General, Challenging Favorite Mark Rutte

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said on Tuesday he has decided to run for NATO leader, a position for which many member states are backing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

“I have decided to join the race for the post of NATO Secretary General,” Iohannis told reporters. “I think NATO needs to renew its vision of its mission. Eastern Europe has a valuable input into NATO’s conversations and decisions.”

At the end of February, Bloomberg reported that Romania had notified NATO allies that it was proposing President Klaus Iohannis as the alliance’s secretary general. However, then the Romanian presidency refused to comment.

We remind you that the name of Klaus Iohannis was already mentioned as the successor of Jens Stoltenberg as the head of NATO. Before the current NATO Secretary General’s term was extended, the president was on the list of possible successors.

The current Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, is the favorite for the NATO leadership, supported by the United States and the United Kingdom, among others. However, sources say he cannot muster enough votes due to opposition from Eastern Front allies such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Turkey and Romania.
