Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu has claimed bronze in the floor event at the Paris Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially ruled in her favour on Saturday in her appeal.
The 18-year-old gymnast initially finished third in Monday’s event, even celebrating with her Romanian flag on the mat at the Arena Bercy, but was eventually relegated to fourth place after the judges revised the score awarded to Jordan Chiles.
The American had requested that her difficulty rating be reviewed, but the claim was submitted to the judges “1 minute and 4 seconds” after her score was announced.
The rules of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) stipulate that it must be done within a maximum of one minute, according to the CAS, to which Barbosu had appealed.
For this reason, the highest sports jurisdiction decided to recover the American’s initial score (13.666), which places her below that obtained by Ana Barbosu (13.700).
The complaint by fellow Romanian Sabrina Voinea (who received the same score, but with a worse execution grade) was, however, rejected.
Shortly afterwards, the FIG announced that it was awarding the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu.
“It’s a feeling I can hardly express, I can’t believe it,” the Romanian gymnast was quoted as saying by her country’s media.
“When I heard the news, I was afraid it wasn’t true, and as soon as I was sure, I hugged my parents and called those who had helped me,” she added.
Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade won the floor gold on August 5, finishing ahead of American star Simone Biles.
The podium of this event, which closed the artistic gymnastics event in Paris-2024, left one of the iconic photos of these Games when Biles and Chiles bowed to a triumphant Andrade on the highest step.
