Bucharest. Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu received her bronze medal in the individual floor event at the Paris Games on Friday in Bucharest, which had initially been awarded to American Jordan Chiles.
On August 5, on the ninth day of Olympic competition, Chiles (23 years old) climbed to the third step of the podium, behind Brazilian Rebeca Andrade (gold) and American star Simone Biles (silver).
Barbosu believed she had obtained a better score, but after an appeal Chiles’ score was revalued upwards, which allowed her to overtake the Romanian gymnast.
Romania then turned to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ruled that the US complaint had been made out of time and re-awarded third place to Barbosu.
The 18-year-old Romanian gymnast was unable to collect her bronze medal in Paris, but did so now in Bucharest, where she said she was “very happy” about this achievement.
On Thursday, Jordan Chiles had called the withdrawal of her medal “unfair” and her national federation (USA Gymnastics) promised to “explore all possible avenues and appeal procedures” to get the bronze medal back.
