For inaccurate and misleading reports about the role of TikTok in the presidential elections of Romania, a representative of the platform from abroad speaks in his statement.
In particular, the representative of TikTok states:
“These inaccurate reports about the Romanian elections are misleading, as most candidates maintain a presence on TikTok but also campaign on other digital platforms besides ours. We strictly implement the Community Guidelines against election misinformation and misleading behavior, and proactively worked with the Electoral Commission to create an integrated Election Center in our app in order to display reliable election information to our community in Romania. We do not allow paid political advertising and require everyone to adhere to our Community Guidelines, which we enforce on a permanent basis.”
It is noted that yesterday a high-ranking official at the Romanian telecommunications authority requested the suspension of TikTok pending an investigation into the platform’s possible role in the election, while Romania’s Constitutional Court today ordered a recount of the votes of the first round of the presidential election, held on November 24 , following the victory of far-right candidate Kalin Gheorgescu.
The far-right candidate, although polling in single digits before Sunday’s election, secured many votes from young voters and Romanians in the diaspora, with his campaign heavily reliant on the video-sharing platform TikTok.
