Romania prevents caregivers from flying to Austria

An emergency ordinance in Romania prevents an “airlift” to Austria. However, the supply is assured, says the Burgenland State Councilor Illedits. However, a flight from Croatia is scheduled to land.

The planned airlift with which nurses and care workers from Romania should be brought to Austria in order to be able to work in Burgenland. The reason for this is an in Romania The state councilor Christian Illedits (SPÖ) announced on Thursday that an emergency ordinance was issued, on the basis of which nurses and caregivers are currently not allowed to leave the country.

After talks with the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it became clear that the flight planned by the state of Burgenland could not take place on April 15. The Croatian airlift will take place as planned. Illedits emphasized that measures are being taken, such as the strengthening of the Burgenland nursing hotline, the increased use of mobile home nursing, the two substitute care facilities and the separation allowance of EUR 500 for caregivers in the event of a periodic extension.

Entry and exit regulations were constantly changing: For example, the Romanian Emergency Ordinance stipulated on Tuesday that workers from the social welfare sector were not allowed to leave Austria because Austria was a so-called “red zone”.

Separation allowance “effective initiative”

Romanian citizens would be placed under “institutionalized quarantine” if they came from Austria. This means a supervised forced quarantine. From today’s perspective, it cannot be said how long the measures will last. “We inform all agencies and those affected by new developments and hope that as many caregivers as possible stay in Burgenland. The separation allowance has already proven to be an effective initiative,” said Illedits.

The planned flight to Zagreb to bring 100 caregivers into the country is not affected and is scheduled to take place on April 15. When they arrive in Vienna Schwechat, the passengers from Zagreb have to go into a two-week quarantine in order to be able to replace their colleagues. Accommodation for this has already been organized by the state of Burgenland.
