Romania opened a new international airport in Brasov

Brasov-Gimbav International Airport in central Romania was opened this morning, and the first passenger plane to land on the runway was of the national TAROM airline, “Adgerpress” reported, quoted by BTA.

The opening ceremony of the airport was attended by the President of the Senate Nicolae Čuka, the President of the Brasov District Council Adrian Vestia, proposed as Minister of Development in the new government, the Minister of Transport Sorin Grindeanu and other officials.

The airport is extremely modern and is the only one in Southeast Europe where traffic is monitored and controlled through a virtual control tower, notes “Adgerpress”.

“Today together we are experiencing a moment of satisfaction and great joy. After many decades of waiting, the first plane landed at Brasov Airport. A modern airport that we, the county administration, built from scratch. I am not afraid to say that this is a historic event for our county, and why not for Romania”Adrian Veschia wrote on his Facebook page.

For his part, Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu expressed confidence that Brasov International Airport will have traffic that will make it a profitable venture.

“This is the 13th airport administered by a county council. I am sure that this is a lucky number and I am convinced that in the coming years Brasov Airport will be an airport with traffic that will take it into the realm of profitability. Because I know what other local government-administered airports face, and how hard they try to secure traffic so they can turn a profit. Airports have no political color, and neither do highways or other modes of transportation.”Grindeanu said at the ceremony.

A TAROM airline flight, carrying the President of the Senate Nicolae Chuka, the Minister of Transport Sorin Grindeanu and the British and French ambassadors to Bucharest, landed at 8.10 this morning at the new airport, marking its official opening. The plane was piloted by Catalin Prunariu, son of Romanian cosmonaut Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu.

This is the first airport built in Romania in the last 50 years, according to the official website of Brasov-Gimbav International Airport. The airport is located in the town of Gimbav, about 12 kilometers from Brasov. The project is worth about 70 million euros, and the runway is 2,820 meters long and 45 meters wide.
