Romania, fire in a Covid hospital: 10 patients dead

BUCHAREST. Ten patients admitted to the intensive care unit for Covid-19 of the Piatra Neamt hospital died following a fire that broke out in the facility. This was reported by the Romanian authorities. Seven other people, including the doctor in charge of the ward, were severely burned. A total of 16 coronavirus patients who needed ventilators were hospitalized in the ward. The Rimini health minister, Nelu Tataru, is on his way to the scene of the accident. The fire may have been caused by a short circuit, but the causes of the accident will be clarified by the investigation that will soon be launched by the Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities today reported 129 deaths of people infected with coronavirus, bringing the total to 8,813. Romania is one of the poorest nations in Europe and suffers from a severe shortage of medical personnel, especially in rural areas. The fear is therefore that for the Romanian health system it will become difficult to manage the epidemic even in the face of much lower numbers than in other European countries.
