Romania Completes Second F-16 Squadron with Latest Delivery from Norway
Romania has reached a important milestone in its air defense modernization efforts with the arrival of another F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft at the Câmpia Turzii Air Base. This delivery marks the completion of the second squadron, fully equipped with 16 fighter jets, as reported by the Romanian Ministry of National Defense.
The acquisition of these F-16 aircraft is part of a broader strategy to enhance Romania’s national adn NATO airspace defense capabilities. “The purchase of the new Lot Airplanes F-16 Fighting Falcon and the adjoining package of goods and services ensures that Romania’s security is increased through the defense of the national and NATO airspace in peacetime and in crisis situations,” the ministry stated.
This delivery is part of a larger contract signed in November 2022 between the Romanian government and the Kingdom of Norway, which includes the purchase of 32 F-16 aircraft for 380 million euros. The deal also encompasses initial logistics support and an additional package of goods and services provided by the United States government.
The F-16s are delivered fully operational, with resources ensuring their functionality for at least a 10-year transition period to fifth-generation fighter jets. This acquisition represents a strategic transfer of capabilities between two NATO members, strengthening Romania’s position within the alliance.
Romania’s fleet of F-16s now includes two fully operational squadrons: the 53rd Squadron at Borcea Air Force Base and the 48th Squadron at Câmpia Turzii.these additions complement the 17 F-16 aircraft previously purchased from Portugal in 2016.
Looking ahead, Romania is preparing for the next phase of its air defense modernization: the transition to fifth-generation F-35 aircraft. According to optimistic forecasts, the first F-35 fighter could be delivered by 2030. Last November, the Romanian Parliament approved the Fifth-Generation F-35 Fighter Act, and a protocol was signed with the united states to launch the transition program. The estimated cost of this initiative is $6.5 billion.
