Roman Savosin: The Unexpected Dark Horse of Russian Men’s Figure Skating Championships

Men’s single skating is the most intriguing type of Russian figure skating. Almost every competition, the athletes always come up with some surprises on the ice. And both on the positive side and on the negative side. The Russian Championship is unlikely to break out of this trend – our singles players are so unpredictable. However, one of the participants looks more confident than the rest in the fight for the title.

Roman Savosin actually restarted his career after a series of failures. A decline in results and an injury that sidelined him for the whole year pushed him far away from the ranks of top skaters. But Savosin is a representative of the same generation as Dmitry Aliyev with Alexander Samariny. Only in terms of achievements at the adult level it’s not even close.

Roma has three national championships under its belt, but it was not possible to rise above 10th place. In 2021, Savosin ended up only in 15th place – the free program didn’t work out at all. Despite missing the season, the skater triumphantly broke into the Grand Prix series, winning a silver medal twice.

Yes, in terms of content it is slightly inferior to the same Peter Humennyk or Evgeniy Semenenko, sensational stars in Krasnoyarsk. Roman does not yet include senior quads in his programs, limiting himself to Salchows and sheepskin coats. However, this is his trump card – he has practically no problems with under-rotation, like Gumennik, and a simpler set significantly increases the chances of a clean rental. Under the current assessment system, this approach is much more profitable.

In addition, Savosin is one of the best in the country in terms of equipment-component balance. He skillfully compensates for the lack of senior quads with soft skating, thoughtful performances and high-quality spins. The free program to the hits of Adriano Celentano is one of the best programs of the season. She fits the athlete perfectly, and small tricks in the choreography literally explode the audience on the step track.

While many top guys made mistakes, Roma went through both stages more or less smoothly. A difference of 10 points is a modest error compared to other competitors. His best result of the season was 288.46 points. Let us recall that a year ago Semenenko and Gumennik played for gold and silver at around 295.07 points. But they approached the Russian Championship already in the status of leaders, and Savosin, one might say, flew into the season as a “dark horse”.

If he shows decent performances for the third time, he will definitely be given higher grades in components, and successful elements will be rewarded with larger bonuses than at the Russian Grand Prix stages. Apparently, the skater is determined to seriously fight for gold in Chelyabinsk. And he has every chance to take the title of the best in the country.
