Roman Polanski: Biography, Filmography, and Rise to Hollywood Success

His films are still successful, but Hollywood has turned away from him.

In total, Polanski made over 20 films (in some of which he also acted), many of which went down in the history of world cinema. For example, his The Pianist, a drama about a musician from wartime Poland, which received three Oscars in 2003, including the one for directing, is decorated with awards. The detective film Chinatown, the drama Tess and the horror film Rosemary has a baby were also nominated for this award.

Roman Polanski was born on August 18, 1933 in Paris in a Polish-Jewish family that moved to Krakow in 1937. He lived through the Second World War in the Krakow ghetto, where he witnessed the Nazis taking his father to a concentration camp. Just before the ghetto was liquidated, not even a ten-year-old boy managed to escape. Until the end of the war, he hid in the village of Wysoka near Wadovice under the name Roman Wilk.

After the war he lived with his father in Krakow. The mother, who was four months pregnant, died in the gas chamber at Auschwitz. In the 1950s, he studied directing at the film school in Łódź, and from 1968 he worked in Hollywood.
