Portuguese edition Public as a result of its own investigation, it was established that the 55-year-old Russian billionaire and owner of the Chelsea football club Roman Abramovich, received Portuguese citizenship as a descendant of the Sephardic Jewish community.
The process of obtaining citizenship, according to the author of the publication, lasted more than six months, from April 2020 to the end of April 2021. The journalist says that he personally saw Abramovich’s naturalization documents.
“Abramovich became a Portuguese citizen earlier this year thanks to the Portuguese Law of Return, which allows the descendants of Sephardic Jews (immigrants from Spain and Portugal) and Converso Jews (those who were forcibly converted to Christianity) to obtain Portuguese citizenship,” he confirmed to the publication RBK source surrounded by businessman.
With a fortune of 14 billion euros, Abramovich became the richest man in Portugal, according to an investigation by Público.
In 2018, Abramovich, who had previously lived in the UK, faced difficulties renewing his British visa and moved to Tel Aviv. He received an Israeli passport under the return law.
Roman Abramovich actively finances projects of Jewish communities in many countries of the world. In Russia, he heads the Board of Trustees of the Federation of Jewish Communities and the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center. According to Público, in recent years Abramovich has collaborated with the Portuguese Jewish community in the city of Porto.
