Roma Draws 0-0 with Lecce: Analysis of Missed Opportunities and Defensive Errors

The Romans lose two points from fourth-placed Bologna, who are at +5 in the standings, and are now thinking about the derby. For the people of Salento, second consecutive profit result

Twenty-seven shots to ten, a post for both, but also a series of goals conceded by Gotti’s team which gives shivers. In the end Roma blesses an unexpected point, as seen on the pitch, with the home team having wasted a lot, if not too much, sometimes even in an incredible way. For De Rossi, however, it was a bad evening, with many things that didn’t work, starting with a midfield that was too static and passive, often dominated by the opponent’s. Gotti must regret the many errors in front of goal (the ones from Piccoli and Dorgu were sensational), De Rossi will start thinking about the derby from tonight.

how much waste

De Rossi opts for small and fast wingers, Baldanzi and Zalewski, a move which, however, does not prove to be a happy one. Gotti, on the other hand, looks for kilos and muscles up front, placing Piccoli as a sub forward behind Krstovic. But even here the move pays off little, considering how much the Lecce strikers make mistakes in front of goal. Yes, because the first half is a festival of mistakes, with Roma getting everything wrong (pressing, marking, positioning) and Lecce never taking advantage of it, missing a series of delicious opportunities. At the end of the first 45 minutes of the game the statistics speak of 16 shots to 5 for the home team, who in effect manage the game throughout the first half. Ndicka gets a yellow card immediately (he will miss the derby), Karsdorp makes a mad effort to contain Gallo and in the middle the midfield suffers like crazy, also because Paredes has no rhythm and it shows (a sensational gift from him in the area by Krstovic, with a sky-high shot of Piccoli). On the other hand, however, on the left they work a lot with the Gallo-Dorgu chain, but it is in front that they make too many mistakes: Piccoli has at least 4 delicious opportunities (on a high kick, with Krstovic and Almqvist swearing, alone in front of Svilar), but even Krstovic never manages to materialize the enormous amount of play of Gotti’s team. Indeed, in the final Lecce also risks a sensational mockery, first with Zalewski who from close range puts out a nice invitation from Baldanzi (a nice shot from him at the start of the match, just wide) and then with Angelino who chipped the post from a free kick external.

In flames

De Rossi immediately runs for cover and removes a dazed Ndicka (inside Huijsen), fearing a second yellow. Zalewski protests for a contact in the area with Falcone, Almqvist goes all over the field coast to coast and Baldanzi wastes from a good position. Gotti sends in Banda and Sansone (immediately dangerous from outside), De Rossi responds with Aouar and El Shaarawy. The match now seems more balanced, even if Roma continues to suffer like crazy in the middle. And it’s a good thing that Dorgu devours the opening goal with the whole goal wide open, kicking incredibly wide to everyone’s disbelief. Then it’s Falcone who outdoes Aouar (freed on the run by a delightful touch from El Shaarawy), Krstovic doesn’t take advantage of yet another mistake from Karsdorp and El Shaaraw tries to place it from outside. Without any more spacing and references, the game is a continuous one-on-one duel. This is also why De Rossi plays the Dybala card in the final. Then Svilar overtakes Banda, Sansone wastes the opening ball high and Oudin chipped the crossbar right at the last gasp. It ends 0-0, with Lecce not knowing whether to be happy for the point or disappointed for the lack of victory.
