Rolls-Royce with the world’s fastest all-electric aircraft

Friday announced Rolls-Royce that their electric aircraft “Spirit of Innovation” reached a top speed of 623 kilometers per hour, which the company claims makes the aircraft “the world’s fastest all-electric vehicle”.

Therefore, Rolls-Royce will submit three different world record requirements to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale – World Air Sports Federation which checks and certifies the world’s aviation and astronautical records:

  • That the aircraft hits a top speed of 555.9 km / h over 3 kilometers. The current record is reportedly 213.04 km / h.
  • Reached a speed of 532.1 km / h over 15 kilometers. It is 292.8 km / h faster than the current record.
  • Climbed to 3,000 meters in 202 seconds. An improvement of 60 seconds from today’s record.

It was during these flights that the aircraft registered the top speed of 623 km / h. It should be over 213.04 km / h faster than the previous record set by Siemens eAircraft-powered Extra 330 LE Aerobatic aircraft in 2017.

Had maiden voyage in September

“Spirit of Innovation” is the result of a project called Accelerating the Electrification of Flight, which includes electric motor and controller specialist YASA and Electroflight. YASA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, while Electroflight is a startup in aviation.

“Following the world’s focus on the need for action at COP26, this is yet another milestone that will help make ‘jet zero’ a reality and support our ambitions to deliver the technological breakthroughs society needs to decarbonise transport by air, land and sea. »Says Rolls-Royce CEO Warren East.

The electric aircraft uses an electric driveline of 400 kilowatts and, according to Rolls-Royce, has the most powerful propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aviation. The first trip was in September when the plane hovered around the UK for 15 minutes.

Aviation is considered one of the worst when it comes to emissions, and in recent years a number of players have begun to develop plans and concepts related to low- and zero-emission aviation. Among other things, Airbus announced in September last year that they had plans for three hydrogen-powered concept aircraft, which the aircraft manufacturer claimed could be put into operation by 2035.
