Rolls-Royce is offering a car at a price of more than $30 million
Rolls-Royce Motor has unveiled its latest exclusive series of cars, the Rolls-Royce Droptail, inspired by the high-speed sailing yachts of the 1930s.
The car seats two, and comes with a removable hardtop made of carbon fiber and electrochromic glass that changes the amount of light entering the interior at the touch of a button.
No specific prices for the car have been announced, but it is estimated to be more than $30 million, according to the US Bloomberg Agency, on Sunday.
A company spokesperson confirmed that the previous vehicles, which were less complex, cost more than $28 million.
Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is inspired by the Black Baccara rose, a velvet-like flower that originated in France. Like the flower, parts of the car’s dark pomegranate color appear almost black in shade, but in direct light, a pearly red shimmer appears on the surface.
The car features extensive parquetry, over 1,600 wood pieces that were hand-finished and hand-placed over a two-year period. The Droptail has a sleek, low-slung exterior that resembles a high-tech luxury yacht; Its nautical-influenced design differs from that of a convertible, which stores the top of the car in the rear cabin and automatically raises and lowers it when driving.
Instead, the top of the car must be lowered manually onto the vehicle. This is the first Rolls-Royce roadster of the modern era, although early Rolls-Royce cars included the Silver Ghost Sluggard from 1912 and the Silver Ghost Piccadilly from 1925.
Measuring 5.3 meters (17.3 feet) long and 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide, the car carries the same twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter V-12 engine and performance specification found in the Rolls-Royce Ghost. Rolls-Royce has built a new Droptail monocoque frame from aluminium, steel and carbon fibre. A company spokesperson declined to confirm the vehicle’s weight.
Compared to other Rolls-Royce cars such as the electric Specter, the Droptail’s interior is quite simple, according to Bloomberg, offering just three basic buttons on a shawl-shaped wooden dashboard. Buttons control quick tasks such as hazard lights, while the bulk of the vehicle’s controls are located in the center console.
