Rolls-Royce is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of aircraft engines, and the company’s management has clearly set a direction for the future – Rolls-Royce will focus on sustainable aviation fuel and more economical airliner engines, abandoning the idea of electric airplanes.
As the pandemic forced the company to lay off thousands of workers and efforts to improve financial performance continue, Rolls-Royce is shedding its unit that develops electric power systems for smaller aircraft. In short, the company will focus on traditional engines.
Of course, Rolls-Royce also looks in the direction of sustainability and one of the ways to reduce the carbon footprint of its products is to use sustainable aviation fuel produced from crops, used cooking oils and other by-products. Although the manufacturer is working with EasyJet to develop hydrogen systems for aviation, Rolls-Royce believes they have a distant future for now, especially for long-haul, intercontinental flights.
The manufacturer’s representatives explain that they will invest the money obtained from the sale of the electrical unit in the development of new, more economical engines.
