Can you imagine cinema without the genre of science fiction? It’s absolutely impossible, because some of the biggest and most influential titles in film history are science fiction.
It’s worth considering what modern culture would look like if no one had heard of Luke Skywalker, Marty McFly, Godzilla, or Neo.
The answer is one – boring.
Fantasy is that wonderful genre that makes us rack our brains and push the limits of our imagination.
These films presented us with utopias and dystopias, asked deep questions about what it is to be human through the eyes of robots and artificial intelligence, and how far our possibilities as humanity stretch.
Fantasy used to be seen as a niche for nerds, but today things are quite different.
That’s why Rolling Stone magazine cut its top 150 of the greatest science fiction films of all time. The publication points out that they deliberately did not include superhero films, as they have developed as a completely separate genre.
