Rolling Stones threaten to sue Trump if he uses his songs at rallies – Observer

The Rolling Stones have threatened the President of the United States, Donald Trump, with legal action if he continues to use his music in campaign actions. In a statement released by the North American press, the Rolling Stones say that they have referred the matter to their lawyers and are in contact with the international association that protects copyright (BMI) in order to prevent the unauthorized use of music by Donald Trump.

The Trump campaign used the song “You can´t always get what you want” at his last rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and he had already done so for the first time in 2016, also at a rally.

“This could be the last time President Donald Trump uses songs from the Stones,” says the statement from the band, quoted by the daily ‘Deadline’, which specializes in news about Hollywood and the world of entertainment.

“Despite Donald Trump’s indications of cessation and withdrawal in the past, the Rolling Stones have decided to take additional steps to prevent the use of their songs in the future and in all of their campaign actions,” the statement said.

“The British band’s team of lawyers is working with BMI,” the statement said, adding that BMI has notified the Trump campaign, on behalf of the Rolling Stones, that the unauthorized use of their music will constitute a violation of contracts that protect copyright and which, if use continues, will face a process for unauthorized music reproduction.

This is not the first time that Trump has had problems using songs in his rallies in ways not authorized by the authors. Tom Petty’s family, who died in 2017, also warned President Trump not to use the song “I won’t back down” at the Tulsa rally.

Through the social network Twitter, Petty’s family needed that, in addition to not having authorized the reproduction of the song, the singer would never agree that his song would be used in a “hate campaign”.
