Charlie Watts, actually a jazz drummer, joined the British rock group The Rolling Stones in 1963, which already featured vocalist Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards and vocalist-guitarist Brian Jones. Brian Jones died in 1969 when he was found dead in his swimming pool.
Of the original Stones now only Mick Jagger and Keith Richards remain. Charlie Watts was usually a calm and balanced personality, unlike most of his bandmates, who were not particularly frugal with drink and drugs.
Charlie Watts’ drumming style is described as sober. During performances, Keith Richards liked to focus on him so as not to be fooled by the flamboyant Mich Jagger. Notable examples of his understated style are songs like “Honky Tonk Woman”, “Start me up” and “Paint it, Black”.
