DRK calls for blood donations on 5 and 6 August

BAD HOMBURG – The holidays are luring many donors away from their donor beds these days. However, empty beds at blood donation centers can become a problem: accidents and illnesses are not spared by good weather.

Only three percent of the population donates blood at all. Yet it is needed every day to treat patients in hospitals – in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse, more than 2,700 blood units are administered every day. Every day, 15,000 blood transfusions are needed for patients throughout Germany.

The next blood donation appointment at the DRK blood donation service is on Monday, August 5th, or Tuesday, August 6th, from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Kurhaus Bad Homburg, Louisenstraße 58.

The German Red Cross is calling on people to roll up their sleeves on these two days. There is no artificial alternative to this fluid. Patients are dependent on a continuous and uninterrupted supply for treatment. Around a fifth (19 percent) of blood donations help patients who are being treated for cancer, for example, but accident victims, newborns and expectant mothers also sometimes need transfusions. “If you don’t feel confident enough to donate alone, you can simply encourage friends, acquaintances and/or relatives to book an appointment together,” says the German Red Cross. The German Red Cross blood donation service supplies more than 90 percent of patients in Hesse’s hospitals with blood and blood component supplies, which are urgently needed, especially in oncology and vascular surgery.

You can book an appointment to donate blood in Bad Homburg at blutspende.de/termine. According to the German Red Cross, donating blood is simple: drink plenty of alcohol-free drinks on the day of the donation, register on site with your ID card, fill out a questionnaire, have a short consultation with a doctor, then donate and then have a break with snacks. As a thank you, all donors receive a voucher for the Taunus-Therme. judo
