On a podcast, Miley Cyrus talks about how her role as Hannah Montana on the Disney show of the same name led to an identity crisis for her. The show told her that people only looked after her as Hannah Montana.

“Hannah Montana” made her famous as a teenager. And yet the Disney show, to which Miley Cyrus (“Angels Like You”) owes her career, is said to have had negative effects on her. The now 28-year-old spoke about this in an episode of the podcast “Rock This with Allison Hagendorf”. The role she played from 2006 to 2011 led to an identity crisis for her and had a huge impact on her self-image, according to Cyrus.

In the teen series she played the student Miley Stewart, who leads a secret life as a pop star. Today she looks back critically on that time: “The concept of the series is that you are only worth something if you are this character and have this alter ego. You have millions of fans, are the greatest star in the world,” explains Miley Cyrus. “But the concept was also that if I looked like myself and I wasn’t wearing the wig anymore, nobody would care anymore. I wasn’t a star anymore,” she says.

How Miley Cyrus discovered the “rebel within”

She had to tear herself away from the thought that “nobody cares about you if you are not Hannah Montana”. And that’s how she discovered the rebel in herself, she explains to the podcast host. “I think that’s why I sometimes created an almost characterized version of myself,” continues the “Prisoner” singer.

“I never made a character that I wasn’t, but I knew how people saw me and I played with it a bit,” she explains, referring to her “wrecking ball” phase. “If I noticed that people care about me sticking my tongue out and they told me, ‘Stop it,’ then I went one better. If people are upset, it means they care and then if you want to annoy them even more. “
