Rolands Kalniņš’s film “Four White Shirts” / Article will be screened in Moldova

On the TV channel TVR Moldova on May 28 at At 9 pm, the feature film “Four White Shirts” shot by director Rolands Kalniņš in 1967 with Romanian subtitles and the title “Patru cămăşi albe” will be shown, the representatives of the National Film Center (NKC) informed.

The Latvian film is included in the European Culture and Film Festival “European Days in Moldova 2021”, which takes place this year from May 17 to May 31 on several Moldovan TV channels and online platforms.

Latvia is one of the eight European countries participating in this festival with a film screening. The film “Four White Shirts” has been translated into Romanian especially for this screening.

Before the film screening, the video address will be addressed to the audience by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Moldova Uldis Mikuts, congratulating two of the authors of the film – director Rolandas Kalniņš (99) and composer Imants Kalniņš (80).

For Moldovan viewers, the feature film “Four White Shirts” is announced as the first Latvian film to enter the most important area of ​​world film history – the Cannes Film Festival’s “Cannes Classics” selection program – next to films created by world film classics Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and others. “Four White Shirts” is one of Rolands Kalniņš’s best-known feature films, but with a complicated fate – it was shot in 1967 and fits into the prevailing modernist trends in the world, but due to its free-thinking, youthful energy and sharp irony, Latvia started a full-fledged screen life only 20 years after shooting . Until then, the film was placed on a shelf and excluded from Latvian cinema processes, NKC pointed out.

The feature film “Four White Shirts” is being screened at the European Culture and Film Festival in Moldova, implementing Latvia’s centenary public diplomacy program abroad. The screening of the film in Moldova is organized by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Latvian Embassy in Moldova and the National Cinema Center.
