Rohrbach’s Volkshilfe Chairwoman Groiß demands human dignity, respect and more money for the unemployed

DISTRICT ROHRBACH. Rohrbach’s Volkshilfe Chairwoman Ingrid Groiß calls for human dignity, respect and more money for the unemployed on the Day of the Unemployed on April 30th.

“Long-term unemployment is not only associated with sometimes dramatic financial bottlenecks, but also has strong psychological and physical effects on those affected. Especially when they are accused of being unwilling,” explains Groiß. “Only 36 percent of the long-term unemployed and 52 percent of the unemployed are generally satisfied with their lives. For employed people it is 70 percent. We must therefore not forget the long-term unemployed men and women in the country. Mainly because the number is still significantly higher than before the pandemic.”

70 instead of 55 percent net replacement rate

Groiß once again calls for an increase in the net replacement rate for unemployment benefits to at least 70 percent. The clear connection between unemployment and the risk of poverty proves that a net replacement rate of 55 percent is clearly not enough. Unemployment should not automatically lead to poverty.

“The funds used flow back to the state as revenue within a few years, as numerous social return on investment calculations show,” says Groiß. In addition, higher unemployment benefits would reduce the health burdens of unemployment, which relieves the health system.
