A boat carrying 297 Rohingya refugees landed at Ujung Blang Beach, Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe, Aceh Province, at around 00.30 WIB, Monday (07/09) in the morning, local authorities said.

Information compiled by UNHCR staff in Lhokseumawe stated that the Rohingya refugees were “seven months at sea”.

“From their statement, it has been 7 months at sea,” said UNHCR staff in Lhokseumawe, Oktina, to reporters, Monday (07/09).

As of Monday afternoon, a total of 297 Rohingya refugees had been temporarily placed in the Vocational Training Center (BLK) building in Lhokseumawe, local officials said.

Earlier an official report by the local security authorities said the ship “landed on the shoreline” and the people on board then “scattered and ran away from the ship.”

The arrival of Rohingya refugees is the second wave in the last two months in Aceh. Last June, 94 Rohingya refugees were stranded in North Aceh waters.

Before landing, several fishermen reportedly saw the boat in the waters near the shoreline.

“The fisherman tried to chase the boat, because it looked foreign,” said local security authorities, as reported by journalist in Aceh, Hidayatullah, to BBC News Indonesia.

“However, the ship continued sailing at high speed towards the coast of Lhokseumawe.”

It was reported that the arrival of Rohingya residents on the beach was known to local residents.

Meanwhile, the Kapolsek Banda Sakti, Iptu Irwansyah, said that his party had placed the Rohingya refugees to a place not far from the landing site.

“Previously we received information from the public that there were Rohingya people who had gone ashore and roaming around, so together with the residents we secured them to one place,” said Iptu Irwansyah to reporters in Lhokseumawe.

“All those who have entered the village have been arrested, and we are waiting for further directions,” added Irwansyah.

They were temporarily transferred to the BLK and “placed in tents and halls” for humanitarian reasons, said a Lhokseumawe municipal official.

Lhokseumawe Head of Public Relations, Marzuki, said they had been temporarily transferred to the BLK and “placed in tents and halls” for humanitarian reasons.

“In the future, UNHCR and IOM will collect data,” said Marzuki.

However, Marzuki emphasized that the 297 Rohingya refugees “will not be combined” with the Rohingya refugees who arrived in Aceh last June.

“You can not join, you can not meet, you can not communicate, because we are worried that there is a relationship between them family (family), until normal conditions, “said Marzuki.

Marzuki added that the 297 Rohingya refugees will carry out a rapid test. “Lhokseumawe city government has prepared the equipment,” he said.
