A large fire broke out in an ethnic refugee camp Rohingya in Bangladesh. Tens of thousands of people lost their homes.
The fire occurred Sunday (5/3) at around 14.45 local time at camp number 11 in Kutupalong. This location is known to be the largest refugee settlement in the world. The fire is said to quickly burn bamboo and tarpaulin. There were no reports of deaths or injuries from this fire.
“About 2,000 shelters have been burnt down, leaving around 12,000 Myanmar nationals forced to flee without shelter,” Bangladesh’s refugee commissioner said.
The flames caused by the explosion of gas cylinders spread quickly, said the related party. 35 mosques and 21 learning centers for refugees were also destroyed. He said there were no reports of injuries or deaths.
One resident said his house and shop were burnt down.
“My residence was destroyed. (My shop) was also burnt,” said Mamun Johar, a 30-year-old Rohingya man.
“The fire took everything from me, everything,” he said
The blaze was brought under control in less than three hours. It is not yet known what started the fire. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation.
